| Blackhill Charolais Herd,
situated in Dunmore in East Galway is a herd that has been built
up over the last 15 years and contains some of the best bloodlines
in Europe. The charolais herd was established in 1994 following
our exit from liquid milk contract. From day one our breeding strategy
was based on a cow line of high genetic merit. We have a careful
process in place when selecting bulls for our females. We use a
100% AI on all our females. We feel it is imperative if we want
to breed the best we must use the proven sires. Our aim was always
to breed stock to perform not necessarily to show.
Presently the herd consists of 35 cows plus replacements but we
maintain a strict culling policy within the herd. Only cattle with
the capacity and apparent ability are introduced into the breeding
lines. We have never used a stock bull and each animal within the
herd would have 3-4 generations of AI breeding sires in the pedigree.
A real testament of our breeding strategy is when we have repeat
customers coming back every few years, there is great satisfaction
in that.
We have stock for sale all year round. Going back to our Holstein
days we have a record of selling the choice from the herd from cows,
heifers and bulls. Visitors welcome to view stock.
