Carrentubber Salers Pedigree Herd

The Carrentubber Salers Pedigree herd was established in 2003 after we wanted to upgrade the existing suckler herd to cows that could work around his off farm employment rather than the off farm employment working around the cows. After much research into different breeds the Salers cow kept coming up as the ideal choice.

Then after a trip to France and to a number of Irish herds came the purchase of stock from some of the top herds in Ireland and France choosing heifers from milky docile cows.

Calving time on the Farm is a time to look forward to now , the sleepless nights, leaving work to assist calving and the calving jack are now things of the past as cows calve unassisted and the calf is up and suckling within minutes of hitting the ground.

The Carrentubber Salers Herd has changed over to a full pure bred herd .The majority of heifers are kept for breeding the rest are sold off the farm. There is a great demand for good Salers heifers. Any Heifer not suitable for breeding are finished on the farm at 24 months .”I always say that I will never sell a heifer for breeding that I would not keep myself”.
