Killanley Red Angus Herd
Killanley Red Angus were established in 2006 with the importation of
six maiden heifers from the UK. Presently we have twelve breeding females.
We are one of a small number of breeders in the country at present. We
place a huge emphasis on maintaining the excellent breeding traits of
the red angus. As a result we use 100% AI on all our females as we continue
to build our herd. Bulls used in recent years have been Thump and Red
Basin Sensation.
We also run a Montbeliarde Dairy herd on the farm. We currently have
a red angus bull running with the herd. The Montbeliarde X Red Angus cross
are the perfect match for breeding replacement heifers for the suckler
farmer. Producing heifers with great conformation, excellent milking ability,
ease of calving and the ability to produce top quality off spring. |

History of Red Angus
The Angus breed originated in Scotland from the small, dun-coloured hornless
cattle brought there. These cattle bred with the native black hornless
cattle in the area, and a naturally polled black breed was produced which
we recognise today as the Aberdeen Angus. The first American herd books,
published in 1886 and 1888 respectively, made no record as to the colour
of individual animals - but in 1890, of the 2,700 animal’s registered
that year, records show that 22 of them were red.
Seven innovative breeders chose to use Red Angus in 1954 to establish
the industry's first performance registry. Throughout its history, the
Red Angus Association of America has maintained this objective focus and
has earned a well deserved reputation for leadership and innovation. Because
it has made the right choices over time, ignoring the short term pressure
of industry fads, the Red Angus breed has attained a high level of popularity
in the commercial beef industry.
Times have certainly changed. The “reds” have gone from being
undesirable and discarded for much of the twentieth century, only because
of their color, to being a preeminent source of Angus genetics. Red Angus’
fifty plus year commitment to its founding members’ vision of more
efficient beef production through the use of the scientific principles
of performance testing has been realized. Due to the numerous natural
advantages with which the Red Angus breed is endowed, and based on the
continued philosophy of the Red Angus Association of America, it appears
that a great breed has come into its own. |
