In 2004 John was breeding 20 Salers Pedigree Cows. In September of that year he travelled to France, where he met several breeders and visited many farms. The time was spent wisely as he purchased ten in calf heifers which all calved down unassisted in January 2005. "What struck me the most was how quickly the calves were on their feet" says John.
John is now farming 45 Pedigree Salers Cows and 15 Charolais Cows running with two Saler bulls. He is awaiting on the arrival of a third bull whom he purchased earlier this year. Most of his stock are sold off the field and this is testament to the breeding structure he has put in place. There is great demand on heifers; he believes this is due to their mothering instincts, their temperament and the ease of calving. All bulls are registered in the herd and at 6months of age it is decided whether they will be sold for breeding or reared for bull beef.

Crossbreeding
The fifteen Charolais cows are crossed the Saler Bull. The offspring from the Charolais X Saler are superb well shaped golden orange cattle with a good coat of hair. The heifers from the Charolais cows make excellent suckler replacement as they combine the beef attributes of the Charolais and the hardiness, ease of calving and milk ability of the Saler. I have crossed some of my purebred Salers cows with Culard Charolais Bulls and the progeny are superb and I encountered absolutely no calving difficulties. Last year five cows were inseminated with Belgian Blue sires. The first of these was born the first week in September. Keep an eye on this page to view the progress of the calves.
